The General Director of Jordan Gendarmerie Forces, Major General Hussein Mohamed Al – Hawatmeh, recently attended a chemical and nuclear risks response exercise. The exercise was carried out by the Nuclear Security Unit of the Northern Gendarmerie Command with participation of the Northern Rescue and Support Directorate Civil Defense and in cooperation with the French National Gendarmerie. The exercise was held at the end of a chemical, biological and radiological nuclear risks course. It aimed to assess the readiness of these units in facing chemical, biological and radiological threats, according to the developed plans and strategies. The exercise included field exercises of actions to be taken in response to any emergency event in the research nuclear reactor, or in cases of chemical and biological threat. It also included a simulation of an attack on a facility and dealing with the nuclear security unit to deal with the incident.
The General Directorate of Gendarmerie, from its strategy to keep pace with the security needs has developed the Nuclear Security Unit earlier this year, to protect the research nuclear reactor at the Science and Technology University in accordance with the highest international security standards. The unit was equipped with the latest equipment and modern technology and its staff has been subjected to specialized courses in this field at the local (security agencies) and international levels (friendly countries with pioneer experiences in the field of nuclear security).
One of the most important courses in this regard was the Nuclear Security course which was conducted from 15 to 28 June 2019 in partnership with the General Directorate of Civil Defense and experts from the French National Gendarmerie, which aimed to:
- Raise the security readiness of manpower to deal with crises and disasters in field of nuclear security.
- Upgrade the mutual cooperation with civil defense during the response for any event.
- Promote the principle of joint cooperation and coordination between the Jordan Gendarmerie forces and other security agencies national/international governmental institutions in this field.
